Jugaadopolis 1: Sustainism, February 2019, Old Delhi.
February 20, 2019Necessity is the mother of invention they say, Indian cities are symptomatic of how innovation can lead to create solutions with limited resources. “Sustainism” a concept coined by Michiel Schwarz and Joost Elffers – names the new context of global connectivity, sustainability, open exchange, and a resurgence of the local. Aishwarya Tipnis Architects in association with Reinwardt Academy, Amsterdam University of the Arts and the Sustainism Lab conducted a Workshop which aimed to seek an Indian essence on the perspective of Sustainism, while engaging with the city (walled city of Shahjahanabad in Old Delhi) and its citizens through an interactive workshop, with the case study of the Seth Ramlal Khemkha Haveli in Kashmere Gate, Old Delhi, which became a pioneer project for the restoration of a private property by a regular family from the walled city.

When i joined ATA in the year of 2013 the restoration of Seth Ram Lal Kemhka Haveli was my first project. From documentation to working drawings, design proposal to negotiations with client, so much i have learnt from this project. But one of the most important thing i have learnt from this project is ‘Jugaad’. From Lime chakki to ceramic tiles, structural strengthening to furniture shopping i have seen a lots of ‘Jugaad’ in this project and all worked beautifully and abide by the heritage and architectural laws.
Thank you so much ATA for all the knowledge and experience and all the best for this excellent initiate of Jugaadopolis !!
